NO MORE MUD WALKS?

 

Our Florida Legislators will be finalizing their budget cuts by April 25.  Education is expected to be cut by $350 million.  Our School Board will then decide how to distribute the cuts.  Our Environmental Studies Center (ESC) is now under consideration to be closed by June.

The ESC has been teaching the students of our County for over 30 years about native habitats.  Over 15,000 students will attend a field trip there this year.  First and fifth graders explore the outdoors using a curriculum that has been meticulously developed to support grade level FCAT and Florida Sunshine State Standards.  The hands-on experiences at ESC demonstrate and solidify classroom concepts.  In the ESC Nature Museum students are able to hold a snake, touch an alligator, and watch an active bee hive. Fifth graders look forward with great anticipation to the Mud Walk from the time they enter elementary school.  In this day of urbanization and lack of opportunity for children to be outdoors, this is a program that we cannot afford to lose.  Students at the Center are active, engaged, and stimulated as they learn to take care of the environment around them.  It is vital to the survival of this invaluable resource for our voices to be heard and at once.
